WHAT DOES A TAX EXAMINING TECHNICIAN (RESTRICTED INTEREST) DO? As a Tax Examining Technician you will work as a member of a team responsible for resolving the full range of tax cases. These cases will involve all types of tax accounts, examinations, and in many cases, highly complex interest calculations. This work includes tax cases which consist of net rate, various court decisions, tax appeals from the Department of Justice, overlapping periods of interest, corporate subsidiary relationships, as well as Presidential declared disaster areas, carrybacks, and other interest abatement issues. As a Tax Examining Technician (Restricted Interest), you will:
Research and analyze each case to determine the scope and nature of the complex interest calculation issues and problems. Research and resolve the most complex interest calculations which include the net rate interest netting process of overlapping periods of debit and credit interest, and other special situations. Research or reconstruct data completing analysis of the conditions and complicating factors including numerous computational errors, multiple tax years, and multiple adjustment issues to compute complex interest calculations. Prepare appropriate documentation for and inputs adjustments, credit transfers, etc. incorporating computations to initiate resolution of all case issues including tax, penalties and interest. Serve as a technical advisor to other functional offices, taxpayers and representatives on complex interest calculation matters. Identify computer conditions and programming errors resulting in inconsistent interest computations and provide analysis for the correction of computer errors. Prepare internal procedures that provide for consistency in the application of tax law under manual computation procedures or for issues that are not covered by existing procedures. Serve as classroom instructor, OJT coach, and quality reviewer. You must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
experience working all tax returns, tax reporting schedules and related records to correct taxpayers accounts by calculating full and part year tax liabilities computing penalties, interest and complex restricted interest cases utilizing the applicable interest rates. Prepare a variety of adjustments and other documents (e.g., payment and credit transfers, manual refunds, and quick assessments) using legal provisions (e.g., carry-backs), interpretation of applicable Internal Revenue Code, regulations, court decisions and ADP guidelines to protect statutes and resolve taxpayers accounts and/or plan, input and monitor for unpostables issues. Provide on the job training and assistance to lower graded and service center employees. - The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.- To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week, on your resume.In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following, if applicable:

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
